Telefonica

Several of the above websites describe the Spanish telephone system very completely. I will add some wisdom concerning the telephone support system provided by the main communication organisation in Spain, Telefonica. Quite frankly it is appalling! Telefonica has very few shops left, (where at least you can take your problem to a human). For example there are only 3 shops in the whole of Malaga province, 2 of which are in Malaga city.

If you have a problem, or need information, you normally have to call the dreaded 1004 number. Before you hear a human voice you will be asked, (in Spanish), to press a key to select the service you require. You will then normally wait and wait for an operator, (I have learned the complete works of Mozart waiting for a human voice!).

The normal Telefonica website, www.telefonicaonline.com has been improved recently, but is still completely in Spanish, but there are now ways of contacting a support service via the internet, or email. However, I have discovered another method that has worked for me several times, if a little slowly. Visit the International Telefonica website, Contacting Telefonica in English and submit your problem/requirement directly via the internet. Be patient – it might take a few days to receive an email reply, but it beats battling with the 1004 number.

Returning a Leased Telefonica Appliance to Telefonica

Many Telefonica clients have been leasing a Telefonica telephone or answering machine for many years and have been paying excessive fees for this privilege. They have often calculated that they could save money by returning the appliance and buying one of the latest, intelligent, cable-free sets on the open market. (You do not need to buy an answer phone, as this service is provided by free by Telefonica.)

Telefonica’s support system makes it almost impossible to find out how to achieve this simple task. Using the International Telefonica website, I actually discovered how to return the appliance:-

  • Visit Locating Telefonica Shops to locate the nearest Telefonica shop.
  • Take your appliance and the last Telefonica bill to the shop.
  • In return for handing over the appliance, you will be given a piece of paper containing a unique serial no.
  • Telephone 1004 and attempt to explain to an operator that you have returned the appliance and they will ask for the serial no.
  • With luck, your subsequent bills will be reduced by the rental amount!
